Nintendo was founded in Japan in 1889 as a playing card manufacturer, and began producing video for the Japanese market in the 70's.  In 1980, the company opened a U.S. production facility and the following year, the firm's now-classic Donkey Kong (which introduced the popular Mario Brothers Characters) became a surprise hit.
